Grant, Contribution or Other Financial Benefit, Policies or Program
- TIAC is seeking a well-funded and balanced national tourism marketing agency and will continue to work with the government to ensure that Canada's marketing efforts in mature and emerging markets are adequately funded, including co-investments with industry, and that campaigns are aligned with industry priorities.
- TIAC will advocate for improvements to the Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive Program as it pertains to volume or group leisure travel to Canada. This program provides GST relief to volume leisure tour groups and meetings and conventions being held in Canada. TIAC will work with Finance Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency and Industry Canada to refashion the tour operator rules to ensure that they function as the incentive scheme they are intended to be.
- TIAC will work with the Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism to develop and disseminate a multi-faceted Tourism Growth Strategy to aid in the development of the sector in Canada. This may have financial and policy implications when it is fully complete.
Policies or Program
- Develop Federal support for the creation of Enhanced Drivers Licenses at the provincial level. TIAC will work to ensure the necessary infrastructure and databases concerning authentication of citizenship and nationality are put at the disposal of the provinces in order to facilitate their issuance of Enhanced Drivers Licences.
- Modernizing Canada's visitor visa process in order to meet international demand for travel to Canada. These initiatives include reinvestment of visa processing fees into increased capacity, expanding transfer without visa, augmenting the VAC network into new priority source markets and utilizing electronic travel authority as an alternative visa stream for lower-risk countries while using security treaties like Beyond eth border to develop visa reciprocity agreements with the US. TIAC is also advocating for a separate visa process and designation for business and leisure travellers outside of the temporary residence system.
- TIAC wil work to ensure that sufficient numbers of human resources are available to staff postions within the travel, accommodations and attractions sectors in Canada. This may necessitate advocating on behalf of changes to the Foreign Workers Program and other federal labour market initiatives. We will work closely with the Canadian Tourism Human Resouces Council to effect such changes.
Policies or Program, Regulation
- TIAC will work with Health Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to devise a set of rules that will permit US medical organizations and societies to hold medical conventions & meetings in Canada which respect both applicable Canadian laws and the Code of Conduct established by the Canadian pharmaceutical industry. This will apply particularly to the sponsorship and educational activities of such meetings as they relate to both drugs and medical devices which may or may not be approved for sale and use in Canada.
- TIAC will work to improve Canada's competitiveness of Canada's aviation sector and the important role it serves in economic development and job creation. TIAC supports efforts to expand the number and scope of Canada's air liberalization agreements however Canada's ability to attract international business and leisure travellers is impeded, in part, by the layers of taxes, fees and levies imposed on the traveling public. TIAC is working to reform Canada's aviation cost structure.

Description of the organization's activities
The Tourism Industry Association of Canada is the voice of Canadian tourism. Founded in 1930 to encourage the development of tourism in Canada, TIAC serves today as the national private-sector advocate for this $82 billion industry, representing the interests of the tourism business community nation-wide. It endeavors to influence government thinking and action on behalf of Canadian travel and tourism businesses, promoting positive measures that help the industry grow and prosper. TIAC's membership reflects partnerships among all sectors of the industry, and provincial, territorial and regional tourism associations, enabling the association to address the full range of issues facing Canadian tourism. Its activities focus on legislative and regulatory barriers to the growth of Canadian inbound travel and tourism.
