Since 1988, the Rick Hansen Foundation has been actively improving the lives of people with disabilities, changing perceptions and removing visible and invisible barriers. Our goal is to create an inclusive world where people with disabilities can reach their full potential. The work of the Foundation involves identifying key issues, assembling experts to develop solutions, and inspiring individuals, corporations and the public sector to lend their support to the process of translating innovative solutions into practical benefits for Canadians. Established in 1988 by Rick Hansen, the Foundation’s primary focus has been improving the quality of life of people with disabilities, accelerating the search for a cure for paralysis after SCI, and creating accessible and inclusive communities. The Foundation works closely with the SCI community through the Rick Hansen Institute, a Canada-wide collaboration of people with SCI, researchers and service providers striving to minimize disability and maximize quality of life for people with SCI. Rick Hansen’s personal story underpins all Foundation activities. Rick overcame a spinal cord injury to rise to the top of international wheelchair athletics; he made history and raised $26 million for SCI causes when he completed his 40,000-km Man In Motion World Tour in 1987; and he’s worked tirelessly over more than two decades to make Canadian communities more accessible and inclusive for everyone. Rick’s passion for mentoring youth is reflected in Foundation programs that use his story to inspire young people to achieve their potential and make a difference in the lives of others. The Rick Hansen story continues to resonate with people from all walks of life because it speaks to the potential in all of us to achieve big dreams and change our world for the better.
