Grant, Contribution or Other Financial Benefit

• Cultural Spaces Canada: If funding becomes available again under this program name or one with similar outcomes, we will apply and stand in line. We would seek to match federal contributions with those from the province, the municipal government and the private sector. The Calgary Zoo, by definition, is eligible as a cultural institution/museum.
• Request funding to support capital and research activities for the Zoo’s Animal Health Centre. Based on the premise that all major catastrophic disease activity has come from the activities of humans in close proximity to animals (i.e. avian flu, mad cow disease), it is clear that the Zoo may be an important source of fauna information and non-invasive research. The Zoo's Animal Health Centre may play an important role in understanding the relationship between humans and animals. Research is essential.
• Request funding to support capital, research and animal care activities associated with a joint initiative with Parks Canada, Government of Alberta and Government of BC to develop and operate a woodland caribou captive breeding facility at the zoo. This is a critical component of the multi-jurisdictional efforts to reintroduce caribou to Canada's national mountain parks and stabilize population in BC and Alberta.
• Request funding to support the Zoo’s Husky Energy Endangered Species Reintroduction Program. Representatives of the Zoo will be in discussion with federal departments to raise awareness and/or grow programming and research that will manifest themselves as good outcomes for wildlife and creature habitats in Canada and beyond.
• Seek funding and support from Ministry of Tourism in order to maintain the highest standards, create excellent facilities, provide educational opportunities and showcase important habitats in Canada and other parts of the world to continue to lead and contribute to the industry of tourism.
• The Calgary Zoo continues to try to find multi-million dollar funding support from the federal government (to demonstrate solidarity with provincial and municipal government contributions: $35 M and $30 M respectively as well as the support from the private sector, in excess of $10 M) to assist with its major capital/infrastructure campagin. We will inform relevant ministers as well as individual federal Members of Parliament from Alberta (Alberta caucus) about our projects so they can find reason to support us in our efforts to secure funding and rightful place in Canada's proud offerings/assets.

• Improving relations with China. To underline this improvement, three zoos (Granby, Toronto and Calgary) seek to feature, one at a time, a pair of Giant Pandas over a period of at least 10 years. The Panda is viewed as an icon for endangered species/conservation. It is also seen as the manifestation of improved political relations between China and another country. The Chinese government deals government to government. The Zoo, working with the federal government, will be the way that a successful loan program occurs.
