We are advocating for responsible use of resources, conservation, protecting our air, land and water — improving in all areas is critical to a sustainable future through environmental stewardship. We need to maintain the viability of our ecosystems for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.

Our health care system (and social systems) needs to re-think how to address the rising needs of this huge demographic of older Canadians. The health system, too, has tended to be oriented to deal with acute care, not for the chronic needs of seniors. The system has also been hospital-based, with less focus on home care and community-based care.

- Pensions -
More than a quarter of older adults who live alone — the majority of them women — live in poverty. The government must monitor the financial needs of older people and ensure the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security program and Guaranteed Income Supplement realistically address needs.
Protecting pensions and financial security for seniors is key. Defined benefits pension plans would deliver the same retirement income at half the cost of defined contribution plans.
A larger issue connected to pensions exists in the gaps in healthcare and social policies. These gaps continue to create barriers to seniors’ independence and inclusion.
A coordinated National Seniors Strategy, with dedicated funding and accountable goals, will ensure we meet the evolving needs of seniors.

Description of activities
RTOERO is a bilingual, trusted voice on healthy, active aging. We were founded by members of the education community in 1968. We’ve evolved to become the largest membership organization of our kind - a non-profit and nationwide network. With more than 81,000 members in 51 districts across Canada, we’re influential advocates and the largest national provider of non-profit group health insurance for retirees from the broader education community. RTOERO’s unique mandate and brand position sets us apart from the other competitors in the insurance industry for education retirees. We provide world-class insurance, member services, activities, research, programs, perks and community service. As an organization that does not rely on government funding or external financial resources, RTOERO’s strength membership retention and engagement.
We also advocate on behalf of our members and seniors through Vibrant Voices to bring awareness and understanding to issues that affect older Canadians. Vibrant Voices is the name of our political advocacy initiative that focuses on three key issues identified by our members—geriatric health care, developing a national seniors strategy and environmental stewardship. This political advocacy initiative supports RTOERO’s goals to improve the lives of members and to be a trusted voice in the education community.
