Description of the organization's activities: | THE CANADIAN COUNCIL FOR TOBACCO CONTROL (CCTC) IS A NATIONAL NON-PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION THAT ENVISIONS A STRONG ANDEFFECTIVE TOBACCO CONTROL MOVEMENT IN WHICH IT PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN DIMINISHING THE ADVERSE IMPACT TO THE HEALTH OF CANADIANS CAUSED BY TOBACCO INDUSTRY PRODUCTS. THE CCTC BELIEVES THAT INCREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS AND CAPACITY OF INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED IN TOBACCO CONTROL CAN ACHIEVE THE VISION OF A SMOKE FREE SOCIETY IN CANADA. FOUNDED IN 1974 UNDER THE NAME OF THE CANADIAN COUNCIL ON SMOKING AND HEALTH, THE CCTC IS MADE UP OF PROVINCIAL COUNCILS OR COALITIONS THAT IN TURN INVOLVE COMMUNITY-BASED LOCAL COUNCILS. IN ADDITION, MEMBERSHIP IN THE COUNCIL IS HELD BY MANY OF CANADA'S PRESTIGIOUS HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS AND SOCIAL AGENCIES, ALL OF WHOM ARE COMMITTED TO REDUCING TOBACCO USE BY CANADIANS. TO THIS END, THE CCTC IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THE TIMELY AND PRACTICAL TRANSFER OF CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR EFFECTIVE LOCAL, PROVINCIAL, AND NATIONAL ACTION ON TOBACCO ISSUES. THE CCTC ACTS AS A KEY FACILITATING AGENT TO COORDINATE AND SUPPORT ADVOCATES IN TOBACCO CONTROL. IT DOES THIS BY: CREATING AND MAINTAINING A KNOWLEDGE NETWORK; AN ACTIVELY LINKING KEY PERSONS AND AGENCIES THROUGHOUT THE TOBACCO CONTROL MOVEMENT SO THAT THEY MAY LEARN FROM AND GAIN FROM EACH OTHER'S KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE. THE CCTC SUPPORTS THOSE WHOSE GOALS ARE: PREVENTING TOBACCO USE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE; PERSUADING AND HELPING SMOKERS TO STOP USING TOBACCO PRODUCTS; PROTECTING CANADIANS BY ELIMINATING EXPOSURE TO SECOND HAND SMOKE; AND EDUCATING CANADIANS ABOUT THE MARKETING STRATEGIES AND TACTICS OF THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY AND THE ADVERSE EFFECTS THE INDUSTRY'S PRODUCTS HAVE ON THE HEALTH OF CANADIANS. |
