• Improving relations with China. To signify this improvement, three zoos (Granby, Toronto and Calgary) will seek to house one pair of Giant Pandas over the next 10 years. The Panda is often used as a sign of improved political relations between China and another country. Two of three facilities have hosted Pandas in the 1980s. Foreign affairs needs to support.

Subvention, Contribution ou autre avantage financier

• Cultural Spaces Canada: Should funding again become available, we will stand in line and apply. We would seek to match federal contributions from the province, the municipal government and the private sector. Will try to ensure that the Calgary Zoo is eligible, by definition, as a cultural institution or museum.
• Request funding to support capital and research activities for the Zoo’s Animal Health Centre. Based on the premise that all major catastrophic disease activity has come from the activities of humans in close proximity to animals (i.e. avian flu, mad cow disease), it is clear that the Zoo may be an important source of fauna information and non-invasive research. The Zoo's Animal Health Centre may play an important role in understanding the relationship between humans and animals. Research is essential.
• Request funding to support the Zoo’s Husky Energy Endangered Species Reintroduction Program. Representatives of the Zoo will be in discussion with federal departments to raise awareness and/or grow programming and research that will manifest themselves as good outcomes for wildlife and creature habitats in Canada and beyond.
• Seek funding and support from Ministry of Tourism in order to maintain the highest standards, create excellent facilities, provide educational opportunities and showcase important habitats in Canada and other parts of the world to continue to lead and contribute to the industry of tourism.
• Seek funding support to share knowledge and alternative energy solutions with Zoo visitors on site and virtually. The Zoo proposes to display and demonstrate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System facilities. It will use environmentally friendly products. The Zoo will show how individuals and families can take realistic steps towards environmentally friendly practices.
• The Calgary Zoo continues to try to find multi-million dollar funding support from the federal government (to demonstrate solidarity with provincial and municipal government contributions: $35 M and $30 M respectively as well as the support from the private sector, in excess of $10 M) to assist with its major capital/infrastructure campagin. We will inform relevant ministers as well as individual federal Members of Parliament from Alberta (Alberta caucus) about our projects so they can find reason to support us in our efforts to secure funding and rightful place in Canada's proud offerings/assets.
