Founded in 1880, the OMA has from its beginning played a vital role in the development and promotion of health-care services across Ontario. As the representative of Ontario’s physicians, Ontario Medical Association (“OMA”) advocates for the well-being of our members and the health of Ontarians. We are committed to strengthening the leadership role of doctors in caring for patients. The vision of the organization is to be the trusted voice in transforming Ontario’s health-care system. Programs, discussion papers, policy statements, press releases, interviews, educational material and meetings arising from the work of the OMA are important components of the medical profession's contribution to the development of public policy on health care.

    • The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) represents the political, clinical and economic interests of the province's medical profession. Practicing physicians, residents and students enrolled in the five Ontario faculties of medicine are eligible for membership in the OMA. The OMA is a diverse not-for-profit service organization incorporated by Letters Patent that is primarily funded by its members. Founded in 1880 as a voluntary association of the province's physicians, the OMA has from its inception played a vital role in the development and promotion of health-care services in Ontario. Today, the OMA represents Ontario's approximately 29,000 physicians. The OMA is governed by a Council composed of about 250 delegates representing 78 territorial divisions and branch societies, and by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors consists of representatives from 11 Districts, a representative of the province's faculties of medicine, and 5 Directors elected by Council. Between meetings of Council, the Board of Directors represents the OMA's governing body and members in all business affairs, and exercises the rights and powers of the OMA as a corporation. From among its members, the Board elects an Executive Committee, which is responsible for liaison with the Government and with other health-related organizations. The OMA's sections represent physicians sharing a common specialty or area of clinical or practice interest. Sections of the OMA are active, thereby enhancing the profession's ability to shape decision-making and ensure that patient care remains foremost in policy decisions. A wide variety of health policy committees brings together experts from across Ontario to address important clinical and legislative issues facing physicians and patients. Committees involve other health-care organizations and special interest groups. The OMA also participates in joint committees with the Government of Ontario in connection with issues relating to physicians. Programs, discussion papers, policy statements, press releases, interviews, educational material and meetings arising from the work of the OMA are important components of the medical profession's contribution to the development of public policy on health care. The staff of the OMA implement policy developed by Council and the Board of Directors. Headed by the Chief Executive Officer, the OMA employs professionals in the fields of administration, practice management, finance, law, health policy, economics, computer technology, insurance, hospital services, laboratory proficiency testing, medical services, physician health, public affairs, communications and other area

Membres ou types de membres de l'organisation. :
Practicing physicians and residents are members of the association. In addition, students enrolled in any of the six Ontario faculties of medicine are eligible for OMA membership. The Board of Directors is made up of 11 directors (eight physician directors and three non-physicians) who are elected by the OMA membership based on their skills and expertise; a President who is also one of the eleven voting Board of Directors. The President-Elect and the Immediate Past-President are elected by members and are non-voting officers of the OMA Board of Directors. The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board are elected by the Directors from among the eleven directors. The Board of Directors provides oversight for the management of the business and ensures that all systems and procedures are in place for the organization to run effectively, efficiently and meet all legal and contractual requirements. The Chief Executive Officer, provides executive leadership and manages the overall operations of the resources of the Association, its committees and its subsidiaries in accordance with all policies of the OMA and direction received by the OMA Board of Directors.
