Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution
- Continue to monitor and oppose any attempt to remove Section 43 of the Criminal Code.
- Continue to propose the strengthening of laws against exploitation of women and children.
Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution, Policies or Program
- Access opportunities through House and Senate Committees to present and lobby for enhanced efforts to address the issue of child poverty. This would occur through budget measures that would increase the minimum wage, improve Employment Insurance benefits, increase investment in social housing, and, improve access to post-secondary education.
- Proposed First Nations Education Act. Presently we are ungoing a policy review in light of concerns about the educational attainments of First Nations children and will continue to advocate for enhanced resources for assisting First Nations children.
Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution, Policies or Program, Regulation
- Continue to lobby for the creation, under the Canada Health Act, of a universal health care benefits program for all Canadian employees, a national system for long-term and elder care, and a national system for affordable prescription drugs.
- Cyberbullying. We will continue to press for a more appropriate response form the Federal government in addressing this issue in Canadian schools. The recent legislation is not what we had in mind as appropriate.
Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution, Regulation
- Continue to seek to improve the regulations for the rating of films and video games to prevent violent products from being sold to children.
- Promote the reduction of Child Poverty through budget measures that would increase the minimum wage, improve Employment Insurance benefits, increase investment in social housing, and, improve access to post-secondary education. In November the Board of Directors agreed to a two year collaboration with Campaign 2000 to work with students and teachers to raise awareness about the issue of child poverty
- Seek changes to the Employment Insurance Program designed to improve access to benefits for part-time workers and to take into consideration regional differences in the implementation of EI regualtions.
Policies or Program
- Continue to raise the profile of the importance of protecting defined benefit pension plans. The CTF is working in collaboration with other public sector unions to advocate for enhanced workplace pensions and an enhanced CPP
- Regional Development: As inequality continues to grow as an issue in Canada and the middle class continues to decline we will continue to lobby for programs from the Federal government in regard to enhanced income supports for low income families. Research clearly shows the impact that family poverty has on student success
