Bill C-50: Bill C-50 was introduced in the House of Commons by the Minister of Justice, Irwin Cotler, on May 16, 2005. Its purpose is to amend the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada. It would take offences against animals out of the property section of the Code and place them in their own distinguishable section and significantly increase the penalties for these offences. The original animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code were written in 1892 and they were only moderately revised in 1956.
