Grant, Contribution or Other Financial Benefit
- To ensure that Canada's high performance sport system is adequately resourced in comparison to its international peers and that Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes continue to earn medal and podium-level performances in international individual and team sport competitions. To advocate for ongoing funding of the Federal Own the Podium program and to ensure that Sport Canada is funded to the degree required to maintain our High Performance sport system on a par with our international peers.
- To ensure that community based sport and recreational facilities and assets continue to enjoy fair access to public investment and infrastructure dollars consistent with the objective of having a healthy and fit Canadian population and that these infrastructure investments, be distributed widely and fairly and in keeping with need, demand and population. We will advocate for the renewal of the Recreation Infrastructure Canada program to ensure that the physical infrastructure of Canadian recreational and sporting facilities is maintained and upgraded.
Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution
- We will make the case for the introduction of innovative new tax changes to benefit sport participation such as making community sport organizations eligible for charitable status and transforming the current tax credit for children and youth sport participation into a refundable credit so that more Canadian families benefit and extending the fitness tax credit to adults
Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution, Policies or Program
- To advocate for the use of sport as a vehicle to accomplish social objectives such as reduced recidivism in the justice system.
- To seek support for policies and programs that encourage sport tourism such as the hosting of major sporting events.
Policies or Program
- Improve the health, physical fitness and wellness of Canadian youth and children through increasing their access to school, community and club-based sport and recreational activities and programs. We will advocate for the creation of a Canadian Sport and Physical Activity Strategy (Policy).
- To improve the health outcomes, settlement, and societal integration of various target groups such as aboriginal and native peoples, new Canadians, at-risk youth and the long-term unemployed using publicly funded sport, physical activity and recreational programs as the vehicle to obtain these outcomes. We will advocate to ensure that sport and recreation programs are included as eligible categories in broader federal strategies to support target at-risk populations.
