Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006. In 2006 Canada and the U.S. entered into the Softwood Lumber Agreement (2006) to govern the export of of softwood lumber from Canada to the U.S. The Act brought the Agreement into force in Canada in October 2006. The Agreement expired in October 2016 and the two countries are now in negotiations on a new Agreement. Any new Agreement will likely involve the imposition of quotas and or taxes on lumber exports, thereby impacting the commercial interests of Canadian exporters. Lobbying activity is aimed at ensuring that the commercial interests of Saskatchewan's lumber producers are represented in negotiations.
