In-house Organization Details
Description of the organization's activities
The Rick Hansen Foundation was established as a Canadian charity in 1988 and has since been dedicated to Rick’s life-long goal of creating an inclusive world where people with disabilities are living to their full potential.
For three decades, the Foundation has raised awareness, changed attitudes, and removed barriers for people with disabilities, as well as fund spinal cord injury research and care.
The mission of the Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF) is to inspire leaders, influencers, and the public to join Rick Hansen in creating a global movement to remove barriers in the built environment and thereby liberate the potential of people living with disabilities.
RHF programs include:
• The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility CertificationTM (RHFAC) program to help improve accessibility of the built environment – the places where we live, work, and play – in Canada through three main areas: Rating & Certification, Professional Training and Accessibility Services
• The Rick Hansen Foundation School Program, a curriculum focused on disability awareness and social responsibility
• The Rick Hansen Foundation Ambassador Program engages people with disabilities to share their stories in order to raise awareness about the many barriers they face and how we can all work together to overcome those barriers.
• Support for the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, which houses world class spinal cord injury researchers and health care providers.
• Working with the Government of Canada to provide leadership in salmon and sturgeon conservation and related initiatives and research.
