These are Canada's most important international awards and have been given to over 293 scientists in 14 countries. One-quarter have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. The Annual Gairdner National Program, unique in the world of major prizes, sends Gairdner winners across Canada to 18 academic centres to lecture and meet with scientists, graduate, postgraduate, medical, undergraduates and faculty. The Student Outreach Program sees current and past awardees give lectures to selected senior high school and CEGEP students. The aims of the high school lectures are to encourage these students to consider entering science programs and perhaps eventually undertake careers in either science or medicine. The Canada Gairdner International Awards recognize scientific discoveries from every field of bioscience. The Canada Gairdner Wightman Award recognizes Canadian leadership in medical science. The Canada Gairdner Global Health Award is given for scientific advances in one of four areas: basic science, clinical science or population or environmental health.
