Ensure compliance with the Canada-U.S. Softwood Lumber Agreement (SWL). The SWL is an agreement between Canada and the US to regulate lumber exports. Under the terms of the agreement, Canadian companies must abide by quotas, tariffs or a combination of the two. Compliance with this agreement is managed by the department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD). We liaise with DFATD and other government partners to ensure the industry is in good standing with the terms and conditions of the agreement.
