The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that supports evidence-based, expert assessments (studies) to inform public policy development in Canada. The CCA began operation in 2005 and consists of a Board of Governors, a Scientific Advisory Committee, and Secretariat. The CCA is registered under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act and received an initial endowment of $30 million from the Government of Canada in 2005. In 2015, this commitment was renewed with an additional endowment of $15 million over five years. In return for this funding, the CCA conducts up to four assessments each year for the Government of Canada on topics proposed by various government departments and agencies. The CCA also conducts assessments outside of the Federal government agreement. These assessments can be referred to the CCA by foundations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, or any level of government.
