Moltex Energy is developing an advanced modular reactor using molten salt fuel in conventional fuel pins. The Stable Salt Reactor (SSR) is a platform technology that can be deployed in three variants. These are a fast spectrum reactor (SSR-W) designed to consume the long lived radioactive waste from current CANDU reactors, a graphite moderated thermal spectrum reactor (SSR-U) that uses conventional low enriched uranium fuel and a thorium breeder reactor (SSR-Th) which breeds its own fuel from abundant thorium while operating. The SSR-W is the most advanced design and deployment is being pursued in New Brunswick. The reactor can act as a peaking plant by storing its energy and dispatching it onto the grid when intermittent renewables are not available. Moltex Energy has a Memorandum of Understanding with New Brunswick Power and the New Brunswick Government to progress deployment of the SSR-W300. The SSR-W300 is being taken through the CNSC Vendor Design Review.
