- Heartland Generation plans to engage Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) on the Strategic Innovation Fund. This will include responding to "Call to Action" requests from ISED. Heartland Generation will provide technical input on decarbonization projects, and associated policies and financial incentives.

- Heartland would like to engage the Government of Canada (Environment Canada and Climate Change) to discuss the "Proposed Regulatory Approach", published June 2019 to Clean Fuel Standard, particularly sections 2, 4, 5 and 6.

- Heartland would like to engage Environment Canada and Climate Change on Output-Based Pricing System (OBPS), under the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, focusing on "a regulatory trading system for industry". Heartland would also like to engage on Output-based Pricing System Regulations under this act.
Policies or Program
- Heartland Generation will engage Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) on policies or programs designed to advance its "Sustainable Jobs Plan" framework. This includes responding to NRCan stakeholder webinars focusing on supporting workers affected by the phase-out of coal-based power generation.
- Heartland Generation would like to engage the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and other relevant departments and agencies regarding the Government of Canada's "Hydrogen Strategy for Canada" document. Specific lobbying activities include providing feedback on financial mechanisms available for clean energy projects. Heartland Generation would like to engage the CIB on financial mechanisms relating to hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
- Heartland would like to engage on the Pan Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, particularly including sections 2, 3.1, 4.5, 5.1 and 5.5, and Policy Annex I and II.

- Heartland Generation plans to engage Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) on the "Clean Electricity Standard." This will include providing written and verbal feedback on the discussion papers and feedback on the development of associated regulation(s) under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Focuses will include definitions on "net zero", "fast-response power", "end of prescribed life", in addition to the treatment of cogeneration facilities.
Heartland Generation understands that the Government of Canada will publish a draft regulation (Clean Electricity Regulations) in Canada Gazette in 2023, initiating additional consultation. Lobbying will continue to focus on the "end of prescribed life" concept, treatment of cogeneration facilities under the regulation, and the "allowable hours" calculations.

Canadian Utilities Limited sold its Canadian fossil fuel-based power generation business held by its subsidary ATCO Power to Energy Capital Partners, a leading New Jersey-based private equity firm specializing in North American energy infrastructure. Heartland Generation Ltd. is the Canadian entity that owns and operates the Canadian power generation business. Heartland Generation became an electricity market participant when it amalgamated with ATCO Power Ltd. on October 1, 2019.
