Policies or Program
- Biosecurity: As a result of a number of CFIA initiatives to monitor diseases in the domestic poultry industry, to ensure that the industry operates under strict bio-security guidelines, to eradicate any diseases of significance if they emerge and ensure adequate compensation is available for those producers that must have their flocks euthanized due to an ordered cull, the CTMA c.o.b. TFC works closely with the CFIA. At times, it is necessary for the CTMA c.o.b. TFC to lobby the CFIA or the Minister of Agriculture where the activities of CFIA pertaining to bio-security related matters threaten the competitiveness or health of the industry, or would result in in-adequate compensation being paid to producers.
- NOTICE TO IMPORTERS: The CTMA c.o.b. TFC is a member of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s (DFAIT) Tariff Rate Quota Advisory Committee (TQAC). This committee is responsible for providing recommendations to the Department and the Minister on the administration of the TRQ for turkey, which are published in the Department’s Notice to Importers. At times, various members of the TQAC will lobby the Department and Minister on the Notice to Importers outside of the TQAC process, if consensus is not possible at the committee level.
- POULTRY REJECTION REFORM: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is restructuring its inspection services related to poultry in federally registered establishments. As the restructuring of inspection activities, such as allowing plant employees to take over inspection from government inspectors, could alter the buying and selling relationship between producers and processors, the CTMA c.o.b. TFC closely monitors any potential reform to poultry inspection practices. Direct lobbying of CFIA and or the Minister of Agriculture may be required under such circumstances, if the impact of reform negatively impacts producers or undermines the competitiveness of the processing sector due to cost recovery/downloading of inspection responsibilities.
