THE ASSOCIATION IS THE VOICE OF CANADA'S AEROSPACE INDUSTRY. AIAC ON BEHALF OF ITS MEMBERS UNDERTAKES ADVOCACY, EXPORT PROMOTION AND EVENT PLANNING ACTIVITIES.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: AIAC HAS APPROX. 200 MEMBERS CLASSED INTO FIVE CATEGORIES BASED ON THEIR BUSINESS ACTIVITY IN CANADA OR THEIR SALES REVENUE. BRIEFLY, THE CATEGORY CLASS DISTINICTION BREAKS DOWN IN THE FOLLOWING FASHION (SPECIAL CATEGORY WHOSE REVENUE EXCEEDS $225M IN SALES; CATEGORY 1 HAS THREE SUB-CLASSES BETWEEN $20M AND $225M; CATEGORY II COMPRISES SIX SUB-CLASSES FROM UP TO $500,000 TO $20M IN SALES). Subject Matter: Retrospective: OVER THE LAST YEAR AIAC'S ADVOCACY EFFORTS WERE DIRECTED TOWARDS INCREASING THE FUNDING OF THE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERSHIPS CANADA [ TPC] PROGRAM, COMMENTING ON THE ADEQUACY OF THE CERTIFICATION RESOURCES IN AIRWORTHINESS BRANCH OF MOT, RAISING THE PROFILE OF ILLEGAL FOREIGN SUBSIDIES AND COMMENTING ON THE NEED FOR MORE PREDICTABILITY IN BOTH DEFENCE AND SPACE CAPITAL BUDGETS.
Subject Matter: Prospective: THE ABOVE MATTERS HAVE BEEN SATISFACTORILY RESOLVED BUT THEIR IMPLEMENTATION WILL REMAIN PART OF THE ASSOCIATION'S PRIORITIES. ISSUES UNDER DISCUSSION AT OUR VARIOUS COUNCIL MEETINGS WILL BE SELECTED BY OUR BOARD AS PRIORITIES FOR THE COMING YEAR. EMPHASIS WILL SHIFT TO THE RESULTS OF A MAJOR SUPPLIER STUDY TO DETERMINE THE IMPACTS OF AND SOLUTIONS NEEDED TO COPE WITH THE CHANGES IN THE SUPPLIER PATTERNS OVER THE PAST DECADE. OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST WILL BE TO FOLLOW UP ON OUR SUBMISSION SUGGESTING CHANGES TO THE EXPORT DEV. CORPORATION'S ACT AND TO EXPLORE WAYS AND MEANS OF INITIATING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS INVOLVING GOVERNMENT/INDUSTRY/UNIVERSITIES. FALL OUT FROM THE APPEAL PROCESS AT WTO ON PROEX AND TPC WILL BE MONITORED AS WILL FTAA AND WTO NEGOTIATIONS. A SATISFACTORY RESOLUTION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ITAR'S IN THE U.S. IS CRITICAL IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN NOT ONLY SUSTAINING BUT GROWING OUR DEFENCE EXPORTS TO THE U.S.
