Description of the organization's activities: THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION OF CANADA (AIAC) IS AN INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION REPRESENTING IN EXCESS OF 400 LARGE, MEDIUM AND SMALL CANADIAN ENTERPRISES THAT WILL GENERATE MORE THAN 85,000 HIGH TECH JOBS AND IS EXPECTED TO GENERATE REVENUES IN EXCESS OF $20 BILLION IN 2002 TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN AND THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001. THE ASSOCIATION IS THE VOICE OF CANADA'S AEROSPACE INDUSTRY. AIAC ON BEHALF OF ITS MEMBERS UNDERTAKES ADVOCACY, EXPORT PROMOTION AND EVENT PLANNING ACTIVITIES.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: AIAC HAS APPROX. 400 MEMBERS CLASSED INTO FIVE CATEGORIES BASED ON THEIR BUSINESS ACTIVITY IN CANADA OR THEIR SALES REVENUE. BRIEFLY, THE CATEGORY CLASS DISTINICTION BREAKS DOWN IN THE FOLLOWING FASHION (SPECIAL CATEGORY WHOSE REVENUE EXCEEDS $225M IN SALES; CATEGORY 1 HAS THREE SUB-CLASSES BETWEEN $20M AND $225M; CATEGORY II COMPRISES SIX SUB-CLASSES FROM UP TO $500,000 TO $20M IN SALES). AFFILIATE MEMBER COMPANIES COMPRISE FOREIGN COMPANIES WHO CANNOT FALL UNDER THE DEFINITION OF ORDINARY MEMBER. FINALLY, WE HAVE AN ASSOCIATE CLASS TO ACCOMMODATE PROVINCIAL ASSOCIATIONS OF WHICH WE HAVE FIVE IN THIS GROUPING (B.C., MANITOBA, N.S., ONTARIO AND QUEBEC). Subject Matter: Retrospective: OVER THE LAST YEAR AIAC'S ADVOCACY EFFORTS WERE DIRECTED TOWARDS RESOLVING THE ITARS ISSUE WITH THE US, CREATING A SPECIAL TPC PROGRAM FOR SME'S, LAUNCHING A SPACE COUNCIL, RAISING THE PROFILE OF ILLEGAL FOREIGN SUBSIDIES, SETTING THE STAGE FOR A DIALOGUE ON INNOVATION AND COMMENTING ON THE NEED TO GET THE MHP PROCUREMENT PROCESS RIGHT. OTHER ISSUES WERE GENERATED BY THE FIVE OTHER COUNCILS (TRADE, SUPPLIERS, TECHNOLOGY, AFTERMARKET, DEFENCE/PROCUREMENT AND SPACE).
Subject Matter: Prospective: IMPLEMENTATION AND/OR OUTREACH PROGRAMS AS APPLICABLE WILL REMAIN PART OF THE ASSOCIATION'S PRIORITIES ON THE ISSUES RAISED. ISSUES UNDER DISCUSSION AT OUR VARIOUS COUNCIL MEETINGS WILL BE SELECTED BY OUR BOARD AS PRIORITIES FOR THE COMING YEAR. CONTINUED ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE MHP HELICOPTER PROCUREMENT PROCESS AND THE OUTCOME OF AN IN-DEPTH HR STUDY RELATED TO MAINTENANCE REPAIR AND OVERHAUL AND THE GOVERNMENT'S INNOVATION AGENDA. OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST WILL BE EXPLORING WAYS AND MEANS OF INITIATING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS INVOLVING GOVERNMENT/INDUSTRY/UNIVERSITIES. A PARTIAL RESOLUTION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ITAR'S IN THE U.S. HAS BEEN ACHIEVED BUT FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS ARE CRITICAL IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN NOT ONLY SUSTAINING BUT GROWING OUR DEFENCE AND SPACE EXPORTS TO THE U.S.
