Description of the organization's activities: THE CANADIAN COUNCIL FOR TOBACCO CONTROL (CCTC) IS A NATIONAL NON-PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO ACHIEVE A TOBACCO FREE SOCIETY IN CANADA. THE CCTC, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 1974 UNDER THE NAME OF THE CANADIAN COUNCIL ON SMOKING AND HEALTH, IS MADE UP OF TEN PROVINCIAL COUNCILS WHICH IN TURN INVOLVES COMMUNITY-BASED LOCAL COUNCILS. IN ADDITION, MEMBERSHIP IN THE COUNCIL IS HELD BY MANY OF CANADA'S PRESTIGIOUS HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS AND SOCIAL AGENCIES, ALL OF WHOM ARE COMMITTED TO REDUCING TOBACCO USE BY CANADIANS. TO THIS END, THE CCTC COORDINATES NATIONAL TOBACCO USE REDUCTION ACTIVITIES AND PROMOTES A COMPREHENSIVE TOBACCO CONTROL PROGRAM INVOLVING EDUCATIONAL, SOCIAL, FISCAL AND LEGISLATIVE INTERVENTIONS DESIGNED TO REDUCE TOBACCO USE IN THIS COUNTRY.
