Description of the organization's activities: | THE SIERRA LEGAL DEFENCE FUND (SLDF) IS A NON-PROFIT PUBLIC INTEREST ENVIRONMENTAL LAW ORGANISATION, WITH OFFICES IN VANCOUVER AND TORONTO. SLDF'S PRIMARY ACTIVITY IS TO ENHANCE ACCESS TO JUSTICE BY PROVIDING FREE LEGAL ADVICE AND REPRESENTATION TO ENVIRONMENTALLY - CONCERNED ORGANIZATIONS AND CITIZENS. SLDF ALSO SEEKS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAW ISSUES. MOST OF SLDF'S WORK CONSISTS OF PROVIDING ADVICE AND REPRESENTATION ON THE APPLICATION OF EXISTING ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS. OCCASIONALLY, SLDF PROVIDES ADVICE TO CLIENTS CONCERNING THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW LEGISLATION. COMMUNICATION WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS CONCERNING THE DEVELOPMENT OR AMENDMENT OF LEGISLATION OR REGULATIONS IS A VERY MINOR PART OF SLDF'S ACTIVITIES, AND MAINLY CONSISTS OF INVITED PARTICIPATION IN HEARINGS OR LAW REFORM PROCESSES. |
