Description of the organization's activities: Canadian Diabetes Association promotes the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy. Programs conducted include: 1) research grants and awards to qualified donees; 2) professional publications; 3) educational publications, magazines and newsletters; 4) nutrition guides and cookbooks; 5) support to health care professionals to further education in diabetes care; 6) support groups; 7) camping services to children in which they learn to live with diabetes more successfully; 8) Corporate Food Value Symbols programmes on consumer food products; 9) support elimination of blanket discrimination of those affected by diabetes; 10) support and administer government programmes designed to aid those in need with required supplies; 11) provide supplies required by those affected by diabetes at competitive prices and enhanced services; 12) advocate/negotiate for access to care and services; 13) development of guidelines for standard of diabetes care; 14) provide a network of community access for those affected by diabetes.

Subject Matter: Prospective: CDA staff to liaise with MPs, Minister's offices and with departmentalstaff on the following: (a) the implementation of the commitment in the last two federal budgets to funding community projects under the federal government's Canadian Diabetes Strategy. This work will entail contact primarily with various individuals in the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Minister of Health. (b) the implementation of the changes to the Disability Tax Credit to include eligibility for those Canadians with type 1 diabetes who meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the Finance Canada and Canada Revenue Agency policies. Meetings will be primarily with staff in the two respective Minister's offices as well as with civil servants in both departments. (c) the creation of a national catastrophic drug plan that includes Canadians living with diabetes, as well as the creation of the National Pharmaceutical Strategy. This work will entail contact with all MPs and Cabinet Ministers, but particularly the Minister of Health and the Minister of Industry. Federal staff of the Federal/Provincial/Territorial (F/P/T) working group on the National Pharmaceutical Strategy (housed in Health Canada) will be primary contacts, however staff in Health Canada, the Common Drug Review and the Patented Medicines Prices Review Board may also be contacted.
