Description of the organization's activities: Canadian Diabetes Association promotes the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy. Programs conducted include: 1) research grants and awards to qualified donees; 2) professional publications; 3) educational publications, magazines and newsletters; 4) nutrition guides and cookbooks; 5) support to health care professionals to further education in diabetes care; 6) support groups; 7) camping services to children in which they learn to live with diabetes more successfully; 8) Corporate Food Value Symbols programmes on consumer food products; 9) support elimination of blanket discrimination of those affected by diabetes; 10) support and administer government programmes designed to aid those in need with required supplies; 11) provide supplies required by those affected by diabetes at competitive prices and enhanced services; 12) advocate/negotiate for access to care and services; 13) development of guidelines for standard of diabetes care; 14) provide a network of community access for those affected by diabetes.

We may be asking for financial support through a grant or contribution, as well as sharing information sharing through the Canadian Diabetes Strategy.

Policy or Program CDA 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada:All Members of the House of Commons, Senators, the Deputy Minister of Health and the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada will receive a copy of these guidelines upon release in 2008.

Policy or Program Common Drug Review
Policy or Program COMPUS diabetes pilot project/COMPUS Common Drug Review (CDR):The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH), through its COMPUS program, identifies and promotes evidence-based, clinical and cost-effectiveness information on optimal drug prescribing and use. CDR conducts reviews of the clinical and cost effectiveness of new drugs and provides formulary listing recommendations to the publicly funded drug plans in Canada (except Quebec). The Canadian Diabetes Association is very concerned about the process surrounding COMPUS and the CDR and has raised our concerns with the Provincial and Federal ministers of health and has presented our stand to the members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health.
Policy or Program COMPUS Expert Review Committee:CERC is advisory in nature and is to provide recommendations and advice to the COMPUS Directorate at CADTH on assigned Topics that relate to the identification, evaluation and promotion of Best Practices in the prescribing and use of drugs across Canada. The Canadian Diabetes Association's volunteers have been appointed to the Committee's Diabetes Management Project.
Policy or Program Disability Tax Credit (DTC) - Canada Revenue Agency:The current DTC is limited to people who meet specific eligibility criteria based on severe physical and mental impairments. Most people with diabetes do not qualify to receive the DTC; however, they still face very high medical costs. Children with type 1 diabetes qualify for the DTC and we continue to monitor how people with diabetes are accessing this credit. The Association receives many inquiries from its members and the public concerning the DTC.
Grant, Contribution or Other Financial Benefit Environment Canada:Clothesline® is the Canadian Diabetes Association's clothing and household item collection program. We will be looking into government funding for emissions reductions programs for the Clothesline fleet of trucks through ECOAction and any other funding available to support emissions reductions in truck fleets through the Freight Technology Incentive Program.

Policy or Program International Diabetes Federation (IDF) conference in Montreal 2009:The CDA is a member of the IDF and will be the key organizer of the IDF Conference in Montreal which is expected to attract more than 15,000 participants from around the World. Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada is the Association's Honourary Patron. The Public Health Agency of Canada is a key partner in the hosting of this conference, and the Department of Foreign Affairs will also be engaged in discussions.
Policy or Program National Advocacy Leadership Forum 2008 and Diabetes Day on the Hill:During the National Advocacy Leadership Forum and Diabetes Day on the Hill, more than 150 diabetes advocates from every province will be seeking to meet with their Members of Parliament and Senators.
