Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution

The Government has tabled the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement negotiated between Canada and the European Union. We are calling for the full text of the agreement to be tabled. Given the information we have obtained to date, we are opposed to the agreement and are working to defeat it.

Policies or Program

Canada is involved in the negotiations of a possible Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. We are monitoring the negotiations and will oppose the agreement if it is simply about an expansion of corporate rights.
The Canada Health Accord expires in 2014. Without any discussion with the provinces, the federal government has unilaterally announced the funding level for the next ten years. We are working to have the health accord renewed with adequate funding.

We oppose the government's gutting of environmental laws and regulations, and its decision to withdraw from the Kyoto agreement on climate change. We are working for effective environmental policies and immediate government action on climate change.

Description of the organization's activities

Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is a non-partisan social justice organization which campaigns actively on a range of issues, including to defend and expand Canada’s public health care system, for strong policies that protect our environment, and focus on renewable and sustainable energy solutions, including immediate government action on climate change, for recognition that water is part of our shared commons and must be protected from privatization, pollution and bulk exports, and for fair trade, rather than free trade. The Council is a non profit organization and does not accept any donations from corporations or governments. The Council has 75,000 members and supporters across Canada.
