Description of the organization's activities: | THE CANADIAN STEEL TRADE AND EMPLOYMENT CONGRESS (CSTEC), THE OLDEST OF THE EXISTING SECTOR COUNCILS, WAS FORMED IN 1986 AS A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN THE UNITED STEELWORKERS (USW)AND CANADA'S STEEL PRODUCING COMPANIES. ITS INITIAL MANDATE WAS TO PROMOTE JOINT RESEARCH, LOBBYING AND EDUCATION EFFORTS ON STEEL TRADE ISSUES. OVER THE LAST 21 YEARS, CSTEC HAS TAKEN ON A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL MANDATES THAT HAVE RESPONDED TO EMERGING CHALLENGES IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY, INCLUDING:-A SECTOR-BASED ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM DEAL WITH THE IMPACTS OF DOWNSIZING AND LAYOFFS;-A STEEL INDUSTRY TRAINING PROGRAM (SITP) WAS JOINTLY ESTABLISHED TO ADDRESS GENERAL AND SPECIFIC SKILL LEVELS OF THE INDUSTRY'S WORKFORCE;-CAREER AWARENESS MATERIALS AND RELATED CAREER FOCUS PROGRAM TO PROMOTE THE STEEL INDUSTRY AS A CAREER CHOICE FOR CANADA'S YOUTH. HUMAN RESOURCES AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CANADA.- A WEB-BASED TRAINING PROGRAM.- AN ESSENTIAL SKILLS PROGRAM.- A SKILLED TRADES SHORTAGES PROGRAM. | ||||
