The Federation of Law Societies of Canada is the national coordinating body of Canada's 14 law societies which are mandated by provincial and territorial statutes to regulate the country's 95,000 lawyers and Quebec's 3,500 notaries in the public interest. Member law societies set standards of admission to the profession, establish codes of professional conduct and enforce them. Participating nationally under the Federation umbrella, they facilitate the mobility of lawyers between provinces and territories and also accredit foreign trained lawyers who wish to become members of Canadian law societies. The Federation is a leading national and international voice in respect of basic pillars of Canada's justice system crucial to protecting the public, including the right for a client's communications with a legal professional to remain confidential, the right of people to be judged by an independent judiciary and the principle that the legal profession must remain independent from government.
