Description of the organization's activities: The International Federation on Ageing (IFA) is a membership based network of organisations, bodies and individuals with a mission to improve the quality of lives of older people around the world through policy change, grassroot partnerships and strengthening bridges between public and private sectors concerned with ageing issues. Our mission is to inform, educate and promote policies and practice to improve the quality of life of older persons around the world.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: The IFA has two categories of membership. Full members comprise local, regional, provincial/territorial or national not-for-profit or non-governmental organisations, including for-profit organizations working with or representing the rights and interests of older people. Fees vary dependent on the total annual operating budget for the organisation. Full members are the only category of membership who have voting rights.Associate Members comprise all individuals and sectors of society interested in understanding the issues and improving the lives of older people. This category of member shall be entitled to attend members' meetings, be appointed/elected to the Board and participate in other activities of the Corporation, but shall not have the right to vote at any meeting or in any proceedings of the Corporation

Subject Matter: Retrospective: Policy analysis concerned with age discrimination, active aging and financial protection and elder abuse in a number of countries including Canada. This information will be made available to the Canadian government as a natural course of our international mandate to inform and educate. IFA will not be lobbying for change directly or indirectly for change to legislation and policies but providing up to date information that may assist the various departments in their thinking and strategy.
Subject Matter: Prospective: Development work as it relates to the IFAs 9th global conference on ageing and the senior government officials meeting on Ageing-in-Place. The IFA is interested in the opinions of the government in preparing a senior government meeting that adds to the strategic thinking and work currently being administered in Canada to benefit seniors. Also in the preparation of the policy related reports our office would be sending the draft documents for comment to various ministries to (a) inform them of the content and (b) to seek their views as to how best to describe current policies of the government. IFA is also available to inform the government on the policies and practices in various countries but does not express its views on national policies.

Grant, Contribution or Other Financial Benefit The IFA has applied to the Population Health Fund (Public Health Agency of Canada) for a grant of 124,000 for a discreet project on Engaging Seniors. The organization will also be seeking a financial contribution / sponsorship to the IFAs 9th Global Conference on Ageing in September 2008. It is not clear what program the application will be made.
