Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution
- Bill S-221 in Senate: An Act Concerning Personal Watercraft in Navigable Waters follow the bill in the Senate and argue against its passage as it does not adequately address the issues and is biased against the use of personal watercraft in Canada
Policies or Program
- Service Canada - Boat Licensing process - Service Canada and Transport Canada have worked with Marine delears the last few years in an effort to set up an on-line e-licensing program. It is to be a pilot program initially and then a full on-line program where marine dealers would apply on-line for the licensing of boats. We are not seeking changes in the licesning process, just the way one can obtain it. There have been delays due to some regulatory changes which are not yet law - working with staff at Transport Canada and Minister's office at Service Canada to help ensure the program proceeds.
- Tourism promotion with regard to the government's announcement to develop a National Tourism Strategy for Canada. Meet with MPs and other officials to raise the profile of our industry and why it needs a place in the tourism strategy
Regulation
- Environment Canada - engine emission regulations. Our industry is affected by the off-road engine emission regulations currently before Canada Gazette 1 and we need to work with the regulation setting group to ensure outboard engines are fairly treated and that the regulations mirror the U.S. Environmental Protection Act.
- Transport Canada Shipping Act - Small Vessel Regulations - provide written submission (May 25, 2009) to staff with specific comments about the regulations which were at Canada Gazette Part 1 until May 25, 2009. Staff have confirmed that they have received comments (3 page letter) and will respond). Changes are quite minor and in many cases just slight wording changes or suggestions to mirror the U.S. regulatory regime in an effort to streamline recreational boating regulations across North America.
