Description of the organization's activities: CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES (¿CBS¿) IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION WHOSE SOLE MISSION IS TO MANAGE THE BLOOD AND BLOOD PRODUCTS SUPPLY FOR CANADIANS, IN EVERY PROVINCE BUT QUEBEC. CBS TOOK OVER THE MANAGEMENT OF THE BLOOD SYSTEM ON SEPTEMBER 28, 1998 FROM THE CANADIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY. CBS COLLECTS APPROXIMATELY 800,000 UNITS OF BLOOD ANNUALLY FROM VOLUNTEER DONORS, AND PROCESSES IT INTO COMPONENTS AND PRODUCTS THAT ARE ADMINISTERED TO THOUSANDS OF HOSPITAL PATIENTS EACH YEAR. CBS ALSO MANAGES THE UNRELATED BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY (¿UBMDR¿) WHOSE MISSION IS TO SECURE DONORS FOR CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT PATIENTS.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: CBS WAS INCORPORATED ON FEBRUARY 8, 1998 PURSUANT TO PART II OF THE CANADA CORPORATIONS ACT. THE CORPORATE MEMBERS ARE THE PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL MINISTERS OF HEALTH OF ALL THE PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES, EXCEPT QUEBEC. THESE MEMBERS PLAY A ROLE SIMILAR TO SHAREHOLDERS. UNDER THIS STRUCTURE, THE CBS BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS COMPRISED OF 13 DIRECTORS, AS FOLLOWS: 1 CHAIRPERSON, 4 DIRECTORS FROM MEMBERS REPRESENTING BC AND YUKON, PRAIRIES, NWT AND NUNAVUT, ONTARIO AND ATLANTIC; 2 DIRECTORS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC REPRESENTING CONSUMERS, DONORS, PATIENTS AND OTHER INTERESTS; AND 6 DIRECTORS PROVIDING MEDICAL, SCIENTIFIC, TECHNICAL, BUSINESS AND PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERTISE.
