• Add Inflammatory Bowel Disease onto the Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) list of identified chronic conditions. PHAC has developed a 3-year Preventing Chronic Disease Strategic Plan 2013-2016. The strategy identifies numerous major chronic conditions; however Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is not included and has been overlooked as a major chronic disease. The CCFC wants IBD (which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) to be recognized as a major chronic condition within the Strategy and wishes it be listed on the PHAC website.
• Establishing an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) SPOR network. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has launched an initiative called Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) to help ensure that research conducted in Canada will meet the needs of patients. The CCFC responded to the open call and submitted an "Expression of Interest" to establish an IBD network, with CCFC in the leadership role, as part of the government’s SPOR initiative. IBD is well poised to be a SPOR Network because of the chronic nature of the condition, the burden of illness, and the readiness within the IBD research & clinical community to strengthen its collaborations. SPOR will create between eight and twelve themed networks. These networks are critical and will guide research that will inform clinical care and public policy.
