- Seeking funding to create the Gichi Kendaasiwin Centre. The Gichi Kendaasiwin Centre is an infrastructure project. The Centre will ensure that Indigenous students are encouraged at a young age to view university as part of their future. The project will allow Lakehead University to build on its success and improve the level of attainment of postsecondary education for first nations.

Lakehead University has about 9,500 full-time equivalent students and 2,000 faculty in ten faculties at two campuses in Orillia and Thunder Bay, Ontario.
