Description of the organization's activities: THE ONTARIO NURSES' ASSOCIATION (ONA) IS A UNION WHOSE MAIN FOCUS IS TO USE THE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING PROCESS TO IMPROVE THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC WELFARE OF ITS MEMBERS. THE UNION NEGOTIATES COLLECTIVE AGREEMENTS THAT SET HOURS OF WORK, SALARIES, VACATIONS, BENEFIT PLANS, PROMOTION SYSTEMS AND SCHEDULING PROCEDURES. ONA EDUCATES MEMBERS IN LABOUR RELATIONS, COMMUNICATES WITH ITS MEMBERS AND CONVEYS MEMBERSHIP'S NEEDS AND OPINIONS TO PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS, GOVERNMENT AND THE PUBLIC. ONA LOBBIES MUNICIPAL PROVINCIAL AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS. THE UNION HANDLES GRIEVANCES AND PROCESSES GRIEVANCES TO ARBITRATION WHEN NECESSARY. ONA STRIVES TO IMPROVE THE WORKPLACE TO ALLOW FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS OF CARE AS DEVELOPED BY THE REGISTERING/REGULATORY BODY. ONA ASSISTS IN THE PREVENTION AND RESOLUTION OF INCIDENTS OF DISCRIMINATION AND RACISM, AND ENSURES FAIR REPRESENTATION FOR ALL EMPLOYEES UNDER ITS JURISDICTION.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: ONA IS A UNION OF REGISTERED OR GRADUATE NURSES AND CERTAIN OTHER ALLIED HEALTH CARE PERSONNEL WHO WORK IN HOSPITALS, NURSING HOMES, HOMES FOR THE AGED, COMMUNITY HEALTH AGENCIES, BLOOD DONOR CLINICS AND INDUSTRY.
