Description of the organization's activities: | THE CANADIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY(CRCS) IS A NON-PROFIT, VOLUNTEER BASED, HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE SITUATION OF THE MOST VULNERABLE IN CANADA AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE SOCIETY IS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT MOVEMENT WHICH INCLUDES THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS (ICRC), 185 NATIONAL RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES, AND THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES (FEDERATION). CRCS ASSISTS MILLIONS OF CANADIANS EACH YEAR THROUGH DISASTER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS (I.E., PREPAREDNESS, MITIGATION, RESPONSE AND RECOVERY ACTIVITIES), ABUSE&VIOLENCE AND INJURY PREVENTION PROGRAMS, HUMANITARIAN ISSUES PROGRAMS, AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS TAILORED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IN KEEPING WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE MOVEMENT, CRCS IS COMMITTED TO SOCIAL JUSTICE AND DIVERSITY AND HAS SERVED CANADIANS SINCE 1896. |
Organization's membership or classes of membership: | The members of the Society are those volunteers and other persons who, through a process of application for membership, formally agree to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, to support the conditions of membership as required under the Society's by-laws, and to promote the Society's mission. Membership is open to all and shall not be withheld on grounds of race, colour, national or ethnic origin, language, age, sex, sexual preference, disability, physical characteristics, philosophy, religion or political opinions. Certain members are appointed as National Members for voting at the Society's Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings. |
