Description of the organization's activities: The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is a national body comprised of animal welfare organizations and individuals whose purpose is to promote compassion and humane treatment for all animals. Its objectives include: to prevent and suppress cruelty to animals and assist in the enforcement of all national, provincial, territorial and municipal laws respecting cruelty to animals; to organize, assist and encourage societies having similar objects; to promote the enactment of humane legislation. CFHS has programs that address a wide spectrum of animal welfare issues, including humane education.
Organization's membership or classes of membership: Member Societies: organizations whose own objects are similar to, consistent with, or relate directly or indirectly to the objects of the Federation is eligible to become a member of CFHS. Member societies are entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting. Associate Members: any person interested in the objects and purposes of CFHS may apply for associate membership. They may attend the Annual General Meeting, but do not have a vote in the affairs of CFHS.

Bill or Resolution Bill C-50: Bill C-50 was introduced in the House of Commons by the Minister of Justice, Irwin Cotler, on May 16, 2005. Its purpose is to amend the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada. It would take offences against animals out of the property section of the Code and place them in their own distinguishable section and significantly increase the penalties for these offences. The original animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code were written in 1892 and they were only moderatly revised in 1956.
