Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution

• Advertising to Children: Bill formerly known as C-414 An Act to amend the Competition Act and the Food and Drugs Act (child protection against advertising exploitation) to support entire bill as a measure to protect children against exploitation by commecial advertising.
• Food Taxes: Amend definition of "Basic Groceries" in the Excise Tax Act to ensure that food taxing policies promote, rather than discourage healthy eating.
• Support "Bill C-460, Sodium Reduction Strategy for Canada Act," and future efforts to implement the principles of that bill which aim to make food companies accountable to customers regarding Health Canada's sodium-reduction targets and Health Canada accountable to Parliament in progress meeting population sodium-reduction goals and public policy recommendations of the 2010 Sodium Reduction Strategy for Canada published by the Minister of Health's expert multi-stakeholder Sodium Working Group.
• Trans Fat: Legilsation formerly known as Bill C-251 An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (trans fatty acids) re support for legal limits on the use of fats and oils containing high amounts of trans fatty acids.

Legislative Proposal, Bill or Resolution, Policies or Program, Regulation

• Advocate that Canada support the elaboration and implementation of fiscal and regulatory measures to create nutrition environments conducive to reducing disease as set out in the "Political Declaration" of the United Nations High Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases held in New York City in September 2011 and subject to follow-up through 2016.

Policies or Program

• Canada's Food Guide: Advocate revisions to Canada's Food Guide, 2007 to urge Health Canada to revise the dietary advice therein to better comport with scientific understanding about the relationship between diet and disease and ensure that food industry intestests do not undermine the advice.
• Funding for Prevention Policies and Programs: Urging that more funds be available for effective programs to improve diet. CSPI does not seek or accept funding from government, but does promote that public funds be best used to finance government or non-governmental programs that effectively advance disease prevention objectives.
• Integrated Pan Canadian Healthy Living Strategy: Support implementation of public policy measures indicated in this broad policy initiative of the federal, provincial and territorial ministers of health.
• Internation Health and Trade Policy: Urge the Government of Canada (esp. through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada) to adopt health-promoting positions in negotiating global standard-setting by the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Oganization's Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Regulation

• Advertising to Children: Press for regulations under the Competition Act and the Food and Drugs Act to limit commercial advertising directed at children.
• Caffeinated Energy Drinks: Ensure the Food and Drug Regulations concerning composition, labelling, advertising and promotion establish adequate safeguards against the risks posed by caffeinated energy drinks, especially in relation to children and teenagers.
• Food Compostion: The Food and Drug Regulations (related to food composition, food safety, food additives, and nutrition).
• Food Dyes: Urge Health Canada to revoke the approvals of food dyes for which evidence indicates they are possible human carcinogens (e.g., ammonia process caramel used in soft drinks) or exacerbate the symptoms of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder.
• Food Labelling: Advocate changes to Food and Drug Regulations to promote improved public health, informed choice, and environmental sustainability with regard to food
• Natural Health Products (NHPs): Revise or better enforce regulations to ensure regulations provide adequate safety standards and acceptable standards of evidence for verifying health claims related to NHPs.
• Sodium in Food: Ensure Food and Drug Regulations provide sufficient incentives and authorities to reduce the amounts of salt added to manufactured and restaurant foods as recommended to and by Health Canada's Sodium Working Group.
• Trans Fat: Promote efforts to monitor compliance with the recommendations of the Trans Fat Task Force to promulgate regulations restricting the use of partially hydrogenated oils as stipulated in the TFTF advice to Government.
