Description of the organization's activities: | FOUNDED IN 1971, CFIB IS A NON-PROFIT, NON-PARTISAN BUSINESS ORGANIZATION WHICH EXISTS TO PROMOTE & PROTECT A SYSTEM OF FREE COMPETITIVE ENTERPRISE, TO STRENGTHEN THE ENTREPRENEURIAL CULTURE IN CANADA AND TO GIVE INDEPENDENT BUSINESS A GREATER VOICE IN DETERMINING THE LAWS THAT GOVERN BUSINESS AND THE NATION. IT IS THE LARGEST ORGANIZATION EXCLUSIVELY REPRESENTING THE SMALL- AND MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESS COMMUNITY ACROSS CANADA. THE FEDERATION IS UNIQUE AS A POLITICAL ACTION ORGANIZATION BECAUSE IT IS THE MEMBERSHIP THAT SETS THE ORGANIZATION'S POLICIES & PRIORITIES BY REFERENDUM & CENSUS. IT IS FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF ONE MEMBER- ONE VOTE. ANALYSIS OF THE VOTE RESULTS AND THE IMPLICATIONS LEAD TO A FORMAL CFIB POSITION ON AN ISSUE. THUS, WHEN CFIB APPROACHES THE POLICYMAKERS, THEY SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO OWN AND OPERATE SMALL- AND MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES. DEPENDING ON THE ISSUE A NUMBER OF TECHNIQUES ARE USED. THE CFIB MOTTO IS "WE NEVER GIVE UP AND WE NEVER GO AWAY ". |
Organization's membership or classes of membership: | EACH MEMBER OF CFIB IS A CANADIAN BASED OWNER OPERATOR OF AN INDEPENDENT (I.E. NON-PUBLICLY TRADED) BUSINESS. VIRTUALLY ALL SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY ARE REPRESENTED -- FROM AGRICULTURE, RETAIL AND MANUFACTURING TO THE CONSTRUCTION, TRANSPORT, FINANCIAL, PROFESSIONAL AND SERVICE SECTORS. THE MAXIMUM FEE THAT CAN BE ACCEPTED FOR A FULL YEAR'S VOTING MEMBERSHIP IS $1,500. ALL MEMBERS QUALIFY FOR THE SAME PRIVILEGES REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT. |
