Ottawa, – A fine of $50,000 imposed on Bruce Carson by the Ontario Court of Justice following his conviction for lobbying while prohibited under the Lobbying Act sends a clear message to lobbyists that non-compliance has consequences.
“This first conviction for lobbying while prohibited under the Lobbying Act underscores that the prohibition should not to be taken lightly,” said Karen E. Shepherd, Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada.
“The outcome of this case reinforces the general deterrence created by previous convictions.”
The Lobbying Act imposes a five-year prohibition on lobbying on former high-level decision makers in the federal government, called “designated public office holders.”
Carson is the third individual found guilty of breaching the Lobbying Act. Mr. Carson has 30 days to appeal the Court’s decision.
The Office has no further comment during the appeal period.
